Genetically modified rice crops might develop on Mars. Researchers have now recognized a gene that, when altered, provides rice crops an opportunity to outlive in harsh Martian soil.
Martian soil, or regolith, comprises much less vitamins than Earth’s soil and comprises compounds that may be poisonous to some crops. To see how nicely rice can address such circumstances, Abhilash Ramachandran On the College of Arkansas and colleagues, they grew rice seeds in a sequence of standard mixes.
